What is Nail Reconstruction?
Damaged, fungal or traumatised toenails can often leave people feeling self-conscious, particularly during warmer months or when wearing open footwear.
Toenail reconstruction is a cosmetic podiatry treatment designed to improve the appearance of damaged nails using a specialist flexible gel system. The reconstructed nail is shaped to create a more natural appearance while still allowing the underlying nail to breathe and grow.
Unlike traditional salon acrylic nails, medical nail reconstruction is performed on nails that are often already weakened, uneven or structurally damaged. The treatment is therefore tailored carefully to the condition of the existing nail and prioritises both appearance and nail health.
What Can Nail Reconstruction Help With?
Toenail reconstruction may be suitable for nails affected by:
- fungal nail infection
- nail trauma damage
- thickened or distorted nails
- cracked or partially missing nails
- post-surgical nail changes
What results can I expect?
Nail reconstruction is designed to improve the appearance of damaged nails, however results can vary depending on the condition of the underlying nail plate and nail bed.
Where nails are heavily thickened, ridged, discoloured, curved or structurally damaged, there may be limitations to how smooth or symmetrical the final appearance can safely be made. Excessive thinning or overbuilding of damaged nails can create sensitivity or pressure, so treatment is always balanced carefully between cosmetic improvement and nail health.
The reconstruction gel is available in natural pink and cream tones, however darker fungal discolouration beneath the remaining nail may still show through in some cases. Many patients choose to apply regular nail varnish over the reconstruction for additional cosmetic coverage.
How Long Does It Last?
The reconstructed nail typically lasts between 4–8 weeks depending on:
- nail condition
- footwear pressure
- activity levels
- and how much natural nail remains underneath.
It can then be maintained or reapplied as required.
Is It The Same As Acrylic Nails?
No. Medical nail reconstruction differs significantly from cosmetic acrylic or gel nail application performed on healthy nails.
The aim of podiatric nail reconstruction is to improve the appearance of damaged nails safely, while avoiding excessive thickness, rigidity or damage to the underlying nail. Treatment is always balanced carefully between cosmetic improvement and nail health.
