Understanding Diabetes and Foot Health

Diabetes can affect the circulation and nerves in your feet, reducing your ability to feel pain or temperature changes and slowing healing. This increases the risk of developing ulcers, infections, and even leading to amputations if left untreated.

Did you know?

  • 1 in 4 people with diabetes will develop a foot problem in their lifetime.
  • Early intervention by a podiatrist can reduce the risk of ulceration and amputation by over 50%.

Diabetic foot fungal infections are common complications in individuals with diabetes, leading to serious health risks and requiring careful management.

Dry skin is also a common side effect of diabetes and can lead to fissures (skin splits) that can be painful and prone to infection.

Simple Steps for Healthy Feet

  • Check your feet daily for cuts, blisters, redness, or swelling
  • Change socks daily and choose natural, breathable fibres
  • Wear well-fitting shoes with cushioned soles and no rubbing
  •  Never walk barefoot – even indoors
  • Seek advice early if you notice pain, colour change, or discharge
  •  Avoid using hot water bottles or heat pads on your feet

Remember:
If in doubt, check it out!

When to See a Podiatrist Urgently

  • Contact your podiatrist or GP immediately if you notice:
  •  Ulcers, open wounds, or bleeding
