Diabetes and systemic diseases - foot health checks

Prevention is better than cure.

Foot health can be severely impacted by systemic diseases such as diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and fibromyalgia.

Common complications which affect foot and lower limb health include:

  • Impaired circulation

  • Neuropathy (nerve damage)

  • Pressure points due to joint deformity

  • Reduced mobility due to problems with balance, muscle weakness, or pain.

These complications increase the risk of delayed healing and ulceration.

Podiatrists have extensive knowledge about systemic diseases and the impact on people’s general health and foot health. We use diagnostic techniques, such as an ultrasound doppler, to diagnose and monitor foot health.

We can provide orthotics to address pressure points and reduce the risk of skin damage and ulceration. We can treat skin problems and infections to prevent ulceration. We can also offer prompt onward referral to NHS specialist urgent wound care if necessary.

We offer a free foot health screening service for people with diabetes. These appointments include Diabetic foot health care advice, footwear advice, vascular assessment using doppler ultrasound, and neurological assessment using monofilament, tuning fork, and Neuropad testing.

Patient reviews:

"After a recent visit it was detected that I had an infected toe. Ultimately this could be fatal due to an infection of the foot or the possibility of an amputation. I cannot stress strong enough how important it is to get your feet checked regularly. Literally life savers, thank you so much." – Tony
